Team Focus: Q&A with a Class 2 Multi Drop Driver

To many outsiders – logistics is often viewed as a series of tasks: pick up, transport, and deliver. But here at Fagan & Whalley, we know that our operations are about more than just moving things from point A to point B.

It’s not just about the trucks, the warehouses, or the technology that we utilise; it’s also about the people behind what we do. The drivers, the warehouse operators, the planners, and everyone else in between.

The truth is that without these committed people who perform their roles every single day with efficiency and accuracy, the supply chain sustaining our country would suffer. This is particularly true for our Class 2 Multi Drop Drivers, who are essential to our local and short-distance operations.

So this month, we sat down with Joe Grzebieniowski, who has been with Fagan & Whalley for almost three years, to get an inside look into his daily life…

How did you get started as a Class 2 driver?

I initially worked at a small cash and carry, doing van deliveries. As the company grew, I had the opportunity to upgrade my skills and get trained for Class C driving. I also had my CPC card by this point, too. Later, when my previous employer relocated, the stability of Fagan & Whalley, a long-established family firm that offered better pay and a shorter commute, brought me across to Team F&W. I’ve not looked back since!

Could you walk us through a typical day?

My day starts with collecting my paperwork and keys. I check my vehicle and get it loaded, plan my route, and then drive! Throughout the day, I fill in the necessary paperwork and use a PDA for tracking. I unload pallets at the correct delivery points and sometimes collect pallets as well. I could be delivering anything from small nuts and bolts to 2.5-metre-tall bamboo plants – so the pallets are always diverse! By far, the best parts of my role are providing great customer service and making people smile.

What sort of challenges do you encounter?

I’d say that with a variety of goods coming through the network, sometimes the size of goods can be a challenge to manoeuvre – but it’s nothing that I can’t handle!

Can you tell us about your vehicle and how technology impacts your role?

I drive a DAF LF 16-pallet extra-wide aluminium truck. The tail lift and electric pallet truck are a real back saver, and the extra space is great for manoeuvring. Technology is also essential. We use Samsara, Microlise, and PDAs. These tools allow us to remain focused and keep our work streamlined.

What personality traits do you think are crucial for this job?

Being polite and patient is essential for my role. You also need a can-do attitude to get through the challenges of the day.

Do you have a favourite route?

Bury is definitely my favourite route because of how familiar it is.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love going on holiday with my family. It’s the best way to recharge.
