The hidden dangers of driver fatigue in the logistics sector…

Many people wouldn’t think twice about driving after a bad night’s sleep – yet, this common behaviour is fraught with danger, much like driving after drinking.

The figures speak for themselves… 

  • 1 in 8 drivers admit falling asleep at the wheel 
  • 10-20% of all crashes are estimated to be caused by driver fatigue 
  • 17% of all fatal crashes involve a drowsy driver 
  • 40% of fatigue-related crashes involve commercial vehicle drivers

Sadly, driver fatigue leads to hundreds of accidents each year, and these crashes are up to 50% more likely to result in death or serious injury. When drivers fall asleep at the wheel, they often don’t brake or make any attempt to swerve or stop the vehicle, leading to more severe, high-speed collisions. 

In fact, research from the road safety charity, Brake, confirms that driver fatigue can be just as dangerous as drink-driving. Fatigue affects a driver’s ability to react quickly and make safe decisions on the road. The risk is particularly high in the logistics sector, where long hours, early starts and monotonous routes are commonplace.  

Interestingly, our telematics partner, Samsara, recently introduced a new AI-powered “Drowsiness Detection” feature. This proactive tool identifies signs of driver drowsiness, triggering real-time in-cab audio alerts while notifying managers via text or email to address fatigue-related incidents promptly. 

So, this month at Fagan & Whalley, we’re taking a look at the risks associated with driving whilst tired, what the causes of fatigue are, and how drivers can reduce the risks of driving whilst tired.

Driver fatigue: What are the facts? 

Undeniably, driver fatigue is a real cause for concern when it comes to road safety. 

  • Nearly 35% of drivers admit to driving whilst so tired they worried they would fall asleep
  • Almost 50% of drivers admitted to driving on less than 5 hours of sleep
  • 1/4 of accidents where tiredness was a contributing factor resulted in at least one death
  • Being awake for 17 hours impairs driving skills as much as having a blood alcohol level at the legal limit of 50mg/100ml

These statistics paint a clear picture: driver fatigue is a significant threat to road safety. The dangers of driving while tired are comparable to driving under the influence, yet fatigue often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. The fact that nearly 50% of drivers admit to getting behind the wheel with less than 5 hours of sleep is alarming. With impaired reaction times and decision-making abilities, tired drivers pose a serious risk to themselves and others on the road.  

And yet, many of us have likely driven while tired. Whether due to night shifts in the logistics sector, time constraints, sleepless nights or simply a lack of alternative options, driving whilst tired or choosing to stop for a rest is a choice most drivers face at some point.  

However, acknowledging the risks is crucial. Fatigue affects your ability to stay alert, react quickly, and make safe decisions, turning an ordinary drive into a potentially fatal journey. 


What factors contribute to driver fatigue? 

Life would be ideal if we could wake every day feeling refreshed and ready to go, however, we appreciate that isn’t always possible. There are numerous factors that can contribute to driver fatigue, particularly within the logistics sector.  

These risk factors can lead to driver tiredness and an increased risk of a fatigue-related crash.  


They include: 
 

1. Driving for long hours at a time 

Extended periods behind the wheel, common in logistics, lead to physical and mental exhaustion, making it harder to stay alert. Research has found that driving deteriorates after two hours of continuous driving, as you are less able to concentrate and slower to react to hazards. Breaks are therefore recommended every 2 hours.  

2. Stress and mental health problems 

Tight deadlines, traffic, and the demands of the job can elevate stress levels, which in turn can drain energy and lead to fatigue. Fatigue and difficulty concentrating are common symptoms of stress.  

3. Lack of sleep (for various reasons)  

Insufficient sleep is a major contributor to fatigue, impairing a driver’s ability to focus and react quickly. Whether due to a sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnoea, or disruptions to your regular routine because of a new baby, busy schedules or stress, a lack of sleep is.


4. Irregular sleep patterns 

The logistics sector often requires shifts at odd hours, disrupting natural sleep cycles and contributing to driver tiredness. Studies have found that shift workers (across all sectors) are more prone to fatigue-related crashes.  

5. Medication 

Certain medications, including those for colds or allergies, can cause drowsiness, which is dangerous when operating a vehicle. Some medications might not make it explicitly clear that they can impact driving, as the small print may simply advise ‘not to operate heavy machinery’. We remind drivers that driving a vehicle falls under this rule.

Signs of fatigue in drivers to watch out for: 
 

Driver fatigue does not occur without warning signs. In spite of the fact that most people are aware of these signs of tiredness, people still underestimate their danger, and choose to continue driving.  

Warning signs include: 

  • Increased difficulty concentrating
  • Eyes starting to roll  
  • Heavy eyelids 
  • Frequent yawning  


What is a microsleep?
 

A ‘microsleep’ happens when someone briefly falls asleep for two to 30 seconds without realising it, often while trying to stay awake, like during monotonous tasks such as nighttime motorway driving.  

These brief episodes, commonly known as head nodding, can be dangerous. After a microsleep, a driver may think they’ve only briefly nodded their head, but they were actually asleep and completely unaware of the road. At 70mph, in just six seconds, a vehicle can cover about 200 meters, enough to cause a serious accident. Studies link microsleeps directly to crashes. 


Who is at the greatest risk for fatigue-related accidents?
 

 It shouldn’t come as a surprise that nearly 40% of fatigue-related crashes involve commercial vehicle drivers. Drivers who are on the road for long hours, particularly those working in logistics, who may have monotonous or repetitive jobs, are, therefore, some of the most vulnerable to driving fatigue. Studies also show that younger male drivers under the age of 30 are also at a higher risk, with early morning crashes after getting little sleep the night before the most common. 52 


How can logistics companies manage driver fatigue?
 

Logistics companies can take proactive steps to mitigate these risks by implementing comprehensive fatigue management procedures. These programs should include: 

  • Regular monitoring of drivers’ hours to ensure compliance with legal limits and prevent overworking
  • Implementation of technology that can detect when drivers are getting distracted and may be prone to tiredness 
  • Encouraging regular breaks and providing facilities where drivers can rest
  • Promoting awareness of the dangers of fatigue among drivers through training and education
  • Implementing flexible scheduling to accommodate the natural sleep patterns of drivers and reduce the need for night shifts
  • Supporting drivers’ mental health, recognising the impact that stress and personal circumstances can have on sleep quality and fatigue

By prioritising these strategies, logistics companies can play a crucial role in reducing fatigue-related accidents, safeguarding their drivers, and helping to increase the safety of everyone on the road. 


What are the legal implications of driver fatigue?
 

Determining if a crash was caused by fatigue can be difficult, but police may investigate driving duration, sleep patterns, and crash details like the absence of braking. If fatigue is suspected, it can lead to severe charges, such as death by dangerous driving, carrying up to 14 years in prison.  

Companies with vehicle fleets must ensure their drivers are well-rested, as they are legally responsible for their safety on the road. Failing to do so can result in corporate manslaughter and corporate homicide convictions, alongside significant financial penalties.
